Aggregate Exposure Assessment
The Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 mandates consideration of combined exposures from all sources ("aggregate exposure") in establishing safe levels for pesticide tolerances. This report provides an overview of a 1998 ILSI Risk Science Institute workshop, the first major meeting on the topic since passage of the act. A working definition of the aggregate exposure assessment is given, and highlights of the discussion and conclusions from the workshop are presented. Also included are final reports from three consultant groups. The workshop and this publication are only a beginning in the exploration of methods and issues for aggregate exposure assessment. At the very least, they stimulated dialogue and provided a benchmark from which progress can be measured. The challenges which now must be faced are also opportunities to seek creative, science-based solutions.
