Scientific Peer Review to Inform Regulatory Decisions:  Leadership Responsibilities and Cautions, Dorothy Patton, Ph.D., J.D, Consultant, and Stephen Olin, Ph.D., Acting Executive Director, ILSI Risk Science Institute, January 2005.  The immediate audience for this report on “leadership responsibilities and cautions” relating to peer review is the leadership community within the federal agencies. This community includes decision-makers and senior executives who are responsible to Congress, the courts and the public for scientifically credible regulatory decisions. Nine brief explanatory essays, presented as tips to these leaders on shaping peer review programs and navigating the upper levels of the peer review process, form the centerpiece of the report. Topics range from preliminary steps involved in planning a review to end-stage use of peer review comments to complete a report. The report takes a “heads up” rather than a “how to” approach. A paper adapted from this ILSI RSI report has been accepted for publication in Risk Analysis: An International Journal.

Principles & Practices for Direct Dosing of Pre-Weaning Mammals in Toxicity Testing and Research, edited by Tracy Zoetis and Isabel Walls, is a state-of-the-art text that offers guidance on how to undertake a direct dosing laboratory study on pre-weaning mammals.  Species selection, study design issues, dosing methodologies, kinetics, and data interpretation are all covered in this important publication.  The book retails for $60.00 (ISBN 1-57881-169-4, order number 811694).  For order information, click here.
